Miranda Lambert Announces New Album, ‘The Weight of These Wings’

Many A-list country artists have released new albums in 2016, but there’s been one particular artist that many have been waiting on to release her new album. That would be Miranda Lambert, who has always commanded attention with her music in recent years. But her new album has been anticipated more than usual after the high-profile divorce she had with fellow country artist Blake Shelton. Lambert has been promising that it will play a large part in the songwriting on the album. Well now we’re going to find out what she has to say, as Lambert posted a cryptic video on her Twitter feed this evening. She’s writing in a journal and at the end of the video it’s revealed (as you can see above), she’s written the title and release date of her new album. It’s called The Weight of These Wings and it’ll be released on November 18.

This announcement is in stark contrast to her previous album Platinum, which had tons of hoopla and hype surrounding it. It racked up critical acclaim and numerous awards from the CMAs and ACMs to the Grammys. Of course this was when the news of her divorce had yet to come out. Over the last year Lambert has kept a relatively low profile and the most news surrounding her was her dating Americana artist Anderson East. Only recently she has started to become more publicly visible, touring relentlessly around the country (although she’s currently on vocal rest). Earlier this year she also released the lead single of this album, “Vice.” It’s currently #18 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and the only confirmed track so far on the album.   1. I’m retaining optimism for the most part that this can, at least, potentially be her best album since “Revolution”. Possibly even surpass that.

    “Vice” definitely left a very positive first impression on me in terms of songwriting quality expectations. My main questions lingering in the air gravitate around the production. While “Vice” is still a strong track on its own merit, I also hope its production doesn’t reflect that of “The Weight Of These Wings” as a whole. In other words, while I do hope the intimacy of that track suffuses the album as a whole, I hope the droning electronic flourishes don’t surface on every other track similarly.

    Just an observation, but I wonder if the album’s title is an intentional titular nod to her promotional single “Roots & Wings”. As in the central theme of this album will be about freedom in both the artistic and personal sense, but nonetheless reminding listeners that freedom never comes free and there’s a lot that comes with it that screams “Be careful what you wish for!”. So with that in mind, I can’t help but wonder if the subtle use of electronica on “Vice” was intentional as if to say this isn’t designed as a “back to her roots” album but, on the contrary, presents a sound that is boundary-pushing and reflects the antithesis of roots in a nonetheless creative and non-pandering way. Which I’m willing to accept as long as the songwriting is strong throughout and the experimenting honors subtlety.

    I did notice “Vice”, as I predicted, has hit a snag at radio. It has experienced consecutive days of losses in both spins and audience at Mediabase including approximately a 300K audience drop today and is presently over a million below its peak audience to date. My guess is that despite the excellent digital sales and streaming, radio callout scores have been poor as I predicted they would be and that is dooming this single just as it is her ex’s terrible current release.

    Oh well. “Vice” has already proven a big success in that she has succeeded in capturing everyone’s attention again.

    • Those call-out numbers for SGAWW were so bad that I wonder if either a) Warner didn’t test it or b) they (Blake) just wanted to release it as a single so bad they didn’t care. Especially when combined with the language complaints (which I found hilariously dumb, but that’s a secondary issue).

      • My guess is Blake Shelton called the shots on the single selection himself.

        At the time of its announcement, “Go Ahead And Break My Heart” was charting better digitally. I don’t think that is one of the standout single choices on the album either, but it was odd to me that they decided to go with that over the Gwen Stefani duet from the get-go.

        Shelton shot himself in the foot here when he easily could have kept his streak going with “Friends”, “Green”, “Every Time I Hear That Song” or “One Night Girl”. Heck, any song besides the song in question, “Savior’s Shadow”, “Doing It To Country Songs” and likely “Go Ahead And Break My Heart” would have succeeded (yes: even the bro-country peak reject “Straight Outta Cold Beer”). But he was so pig-headed about dishing out the dirt that I’m sure he lobbied to have “She’s Got A Way With Words” to lead the way.

        Though I’ve seen some argue the mentioning of the word “sex” in the song is partially to blame, I honestly doubt that had anything to do with this stalling.

        After all, he also mentioned the word in the opening verse of “Mine Would Be You”, and you didn’t see that stop the song from reaching #1.

        No, I think it’s a combination of 1) the casual misogyny of the song that turns a significant chunk of the core middle-aged female listener base off, and 2) the mentioning of “S.O.B in sober” and “F.U. in my future” lyrics.

        • FU in the future was the biggest turn off to radio friendly audience. Blake was bitter & now he is more bitter. Also hasn’t been nominated for an award since releasing this rushed generic album.

        • I think GAABMY wasn’t the next single for a couple reasons, among them being it’s a full blown duet and I don’t think Blake wants to perform the song w/o Gwen, and he always does his singles on tour. I agree with you though that every other song on this album probably wouldn’t have kept the #1 streak alive.

          Think it wasn’t a very good song to start with, and the radio edit made it worse. The FU line, the SOB line etc. Although how any of that is worse than songs that promote heavy drinking, domestic violence tc is just weird to me (and for the record I have no problem w/the promoting drinking songs either, it’s just weird to me that people focus on language vs message).

          I’d also agree that it was probably Blake’s call. On a certain level I sympathize with him wanting to get his message out, especially given that my guess is a lot of people made/make certain assumptions about why the marriage ended. But I really just don’t care/want to hear about it.

          Anyways looks like the next single will be SOCB, which is actually terrible, and will probably go to #1. Singles choices this era have stunk.

          • Here’s what I would have designated the singles:

            *

            1: “Friends” (Not only is this an up-tempo with a fair bit of country instrumentation that would prove a crowd-pleaser, but I’d argue since the album is only very loosely personal, it reflects the whole of the album well in that this track, after all, is about the beginning of a relationship. An easy #1 that would likely charm more listeners dismissive of Blake overall as a whole.)

            2: “Every Time I Hear That Song” (I don’t personally care for this song at all, but since I know he prides pop/Adult Top 40-esque accessibility, it makes sense as a follow-up with power ballad-y elements. Another easy #1.)

            3: “Green” (Follow up a syrupy sad track with one of his most energetic singles of “The Voice” era. Again, the country instrumentation touch-ups will result in an all-around crowd pleaser that should also have no trouble reaching #1.)

            4: “Go Ahead And Break My Heart” (This could potentially snap Shelton’s #1 streak, but the star power would result in solid sales.)

            5: “Every Goodbye” (If they insist on going five deep…)

            Really, the only two choices I even personally like are “Friends” and “Green” (let’s be honest: “Savior’s Shadow” would never fly at country radio.)

            But in terms of melancholic-sounding vanilla mid-tempos with ballad-y leanings, I can easily envision “Every Time I Hear That Song” already having reached #1 by now as a second single without any pushback.

  2. This probably isn’t totally fair to Miranda (since Blake already put out an album), but I am over her and Blake’s divorce drama. By the time this album comes out, it will have been a year and a half, and I just don’t want to hear about it anymore.

    I thought the lyrics in Vice were very good, I didn’t love the production. But I don’t want a doom & gloom heartbreak album….so the teaser left me feeling cold.

    Miranda is a hard artist for me on these forums because I think she is ok, but not great…and a lot of critics/forum members on here tend to sing her praises. Platinum isn’t really a country album, any more than Maren’s latest release was a country album…but it wasn’t pop. Anyways I hope she dials back the production in this album, and keeps giving us more interesting lyrics (I loved that Vice was more introspective & less burn the place down).

    • Not doom & gloomy more like the weight of a big announcement! Miranda also said she would never release a heartbreak album & listening to her album no one would go away thinking it was sad. OMG, can’t wait til November!

    • I’m over the divorce stuff too, but the talk of it has been kept alive thanks to Blake’s current single and this album supposedly referencing the divorce. Trust me I only bring it up because it’s still a talking point.

      I don’t know how long you’ve followed us, but I wasn’t a fan of Platinum. I never officially reviewed it, but I’ve remarked several times that I think it’s one of her weaker efforts and the only single on it I thought was good was “Automatic.” Production was a mess at times, while the songwriting didn’t always shine. Lambert is at her best when she’s vulnerable and restrained. Hopefully we get that on this album.

      • Oh, I’m not blaming you for keeping divorce talk alive, I’m placing it solely on the two of them. They’re both using it to sell music. I think (hope) that with the death of SGAWW that’s the end of it from Blake (esp since most of the album isn’t even really about the divorce). But with Miranda’s new album I’m afraid it will all start up again…and I’m just sick of it (which is why I admitted I wasn’t being totally fair to Miranda).

        And the comment about critics/commentators was more in general than just this blog. I think I agree with you on Platinum. On “Vice” for me it’s more a +1 or so song, which is what I mean by I like it ok (I’d go with WMM for best song currently on radio).

        • The Sam Hunt written song? No thanks. Sounds great vocally but lyrics are basic. Vice must stronger lyrics & if radio played it- it would be best on the radio.

    • Bless your Heart! Miranda is AWESOME! Her drama, as you put it, will be wrapped in a way for others to place themselves in the situations. Unlike BS that has sad generic song that doesn’t have any real creativity. Platinum had old school country songs(name Alist star who has done that), southern rock, R&B & pop influenced tracks but wraps it up in a country vocal. Always pushing boundaries lyrically and sonically in her albums that is why so many praise her for them.

  3. Unlike others who put out the same song over and over, Miranda makes sure all are unique. Miranda has NEVER been a radio darling, not caring she released Vice anyway. Just one of the reasons so many of us love her. She had sold 2 platinum albums and released a 3rd before radio even tried to let her songs go #1. Vice (8wks out) has better sales than many radio #1s this year.
    I for one am so excited to hear this album. Like she stated she has had more time to songwriter than ever before! Vice is strong lyrically & love the throwback feel. Also really love the starkness in certain parts.
    Can’t wait to see the full picture of the album. Really a fan of her voice & lyrics. Also Been really impressed how she has handled everything this last year.
